Our Approach
The Bayou Collective Giving Circle is rooted in a long tradition of Black collective giving.
After emancipation, formerly enslaved Black Houstonians did more than gather to remember freedom. They organized. They pooled resources. They made a plan.
In the late 1800s, Black community leaders came together to raise funds to purchase land so they would have a permanent place to mark Juneteenth—land that became Emancipation Park, the oldest park in Texas.
That act was about more than celebration. It was about claiming space, exercising new rights, and deciding together how resources would be used for the community’s benefit.
The Bayou Collective carries that legacy forward by pooling funds and directing them, collectively, to Black-led organizations with care, trust, and accountability.
